welcome to La Serena!

Daniela Bustos-Korts
University Austral of Chile
Co-Chair
Her main interest is genotype-to-phenotype modeling to characterize and predict crop adaptation in multiple environments. These modeling approaches aim to improve the chances of obtaining better adapted varieties by increasing the number of genotypes evaluated in the selection process and considering the structure of the target population of genotypes and the target population of environments.
During his PhD, she worked on methods to identify groups of more homogeneous environments in terms of genotypic classification (megaenvironments). He also has experience in the use of molecular markers and Exome sequencing to identify genomic regions related to phenotypic performance in different environments (QTLxE, genomic prediction).
She has been involved in developing strategies to build the training set for genomic prediction models and methods for QTL detection in multiple environments. He is currently working on the synthesis of statistical-genetic models with crop growth models such as APSIM-wheat to evaluate genetic improvement and phenotyping strategies.

Charlie Messina
University of Florida, United States of America
Co-Chair
His teaching and research program focuses on how to harmonize crop improvement and AI efforts for agricultural systems to regenerate the environment while providing nutrition security, improve human health and adapt to climate change.
He leads a team that develops prediction methods by harnessing principles of crop science, dynamical systems modeling (symbolic AI), statistical learning (sub-symbolic AI) and complex systems theory. He collaborates with breeders, engineers and agronomists to co-create systems within operational breeding program.

Welcome to the digital platform of the Eighth InterDrought Congress (IDVIII)!
Drought is a major challenge for global agriculture, and climate change is making it even more critical to find solutions. By selecting the right genotype-environment-management-social (GxExMxS) combinations, we can improve water use and boost crop yields. This requires a collaborative effort across plant breeding, physiology, agronomy, and socio-economic contexts.
IDVIII is more than a conference—it’s a global forum for sharing knowledge, sparking new ideas, and building partnerships to tackle this urgent challenge. Continuing the legacy of past congresses, IDVIII bridges applied and fundamental research to strengthen crop resilience.
